I heard of this Yi Wu many times. Although didn’t get a clear picture of it. It sounds to me like a Shopping Heaven selling low volume products to international buyers. I have found some suppliers who can do small quantities at good pricing BUT they need babysitting. You can usually find 4-5 locals willing to be your rep who have descent experience BUT they usually are taking in profit from the manufacturer as well.

The good is that there’s tons of suppliers there to compare, and lots of opportunities to actually meet your suppliers. The bad is that there are trading companies posing as factories, and you better beware if a deal seems too good to be true. A good agent in Yiwu is worth her/his weight in gold. A bad agent will make you wish you had stuck with online sourcing.

If you go, be sure you know what you want, otherwise you’ll be overwhelmed with the selection. The fair is so large it would take at least 1 week of 8 hour days to walk the whole thing.

Personally I do not like Yiwu.

It is nothing more than a Chinese flea market selling cheap, low quality goods. It would be the perfect place to go shopping for stock for a one dollar discount store but not much else.

Most of the traders there are not manufacturers although they will all pretend that they are.

Honestly you are better off sticking with online sourcing, accepting higher MOQ, and actually dealing with semi-professional companies, than scrounging around in Yiwu for the cheaper, cheaper price!

Goods from Yiwu are obviously not suitable to some markets like of Japan, West European Countries, and maybe also of US and Australia, but for many other markets of developing countries even very poor countries, may be Very Very suitable.

Yi Wu is a city south of HANGZHOU, the capital of Zhejiang province. Your best bet is to take the express train from Shanghai South Train Station(around 1:00pm) southward to Nanchang which will stop at Yiwu. There is a direct bus from Shanghai Pudong airport to the South Train Station. The journey will take about 3 hours. Don’t take the highway by car as it is often jammed with trucks and buses. Beware of the "nice guys" who will talk you into a private taxi ride asking for 600Yuan for the trip at the South Train Station.You will be sorry for making the decision to go with him.
